The Connection Gap Closer: Simple Moves with a Massive Impact

"Connecting is the mortar. It holds a community together, creating a safe space and increasing influence." —Debbie Simões

We’ve spent this blog series exploring what it means to lead with connection, to see students as whole people, and to shift from managing to truly leading. Now, it’s time to bring it all together—with practical, powerful moves that create classrooms where students (and teachers) thrive.

In High Five to Thrive, we describe these moments of connection as “small biggies”—seemingly small actions that have a disproportionately large impact. When consistently practiced, they transform classroom culture, build trust, and close the many gaps our students face: academic gaps, language gaps, behavior gaps, and—most importantly—connection gaps.

Why Connection Closes Gaps

When students feel seen, known, and safe, their brains are in a better state for learning. The affective filter lowers, anxiety recedes, and engagement increases. Students who might otherwise check out or act out begin to lean in. They try again. They ask for help. They believe they can grow.

Connection doesn’t replace academic rigor—it makes it possible.

The Culture Shaper: Intentional Rituals

One of the most effective tools for building connection is something every teacher can start using tomorrow: classroom rituals. These rituals create shared experiences, reinforce values, and communicate that every member of the community matters.

Whether it’s greeting students at the door by name, starting class with a mindful moment, or closing the week with a gratitude circle—these small routines send a big message: You belong here.

Intentional rituals:

  • Help students build interpersonal and intrapersonal skills

  • Foster empathy and mutual respect

  • Reinforce classroom values like kindness, curiosity, and collaboration

Celebrate Shared Wins

Classroom Leaders intentionally create moments to celebrate shared wins—not just academic victories, but moments when the class showed compassion, collaborated well, or supported each other through a challenge.

Celebrating shared wins:

  • Reinforces the values you want to see more of

  • Creates a sense of unity and purpose

  • Invites students to see themselves as part of something bigger

A quick “shout-out circle” on Fridays or a bulletin board that highlights class values in action can do wonders for morale and motivation.

Diffusers: Staying Calm and Connected

Even in the most connected classrooms, challenges arise. That’s where diffusers come in. These are quick, neutral phrases that allow teachers to maintain instructional flow without escalating a confrontation.

When a student blurts out, “This is boring,” a diffuser might be, “I hear you, but let’s press on,” or “That may be true.”

Delivered calmly and without sarcasm, diffusers prevent power struggles and model self-regulation. In our Time to Teach: Classroom Leadership course, teachers learn to use these simple, powerful tools to stay composed and keep students engaged.

Connection To-Do List (Start Today)

Want to strengthen connection in your classroom this week? Here’s a simple, practical list that draws from this entire blog series:

  1. Greet each student by name.

  2. Reinforce one value-based behavior each day (kindness, curiosity, perseverance).

  3. Celebrate a shared win at least once this week.

  4. Use one intentional ritual to start or close the day.

  5. Try one diffuser the next time a challenging moment arises.

  6. Offer a piece of non-contingent praise (e.g., “I’m glad you’re here.”)

  7. Reflect on your mindset—what mental model are you using to view your students?

These are the small biggies. Doable. Repeatable. Transformational.

Because the real strategy for closing the gap isn’t more pressure—it’s deeper connection.

Final Thought: Be the Leader They Need

You stepped into this profession to make a difference. What you say and do can echo in students’ lives long after they leave your classroom. Your legacy is crafted each day. We know it’s not easy. Best Questers is here to support your journey into wellness, hope, connection and deep satisfaction as you live out your highest calling.
